Chanel Dror, managing editor at CamilleStyles.com, is craving a fresh living room for fall that’s both inviting and ideal for entertaining. Here, she talks inspiration, how to land a look that will stand the test of time, and ways to arrange your space to suit your needs for this season and beyond.
Prepping for Change
The arrival of fall brings lots of exciting changes, and as I get giddy about endless layering possibilities, leather boots and chunky sweaters are always the first thoughts that get me in an autumnal state of mind. This year, I’ve decided to take those seasonal sensibilities and apply them to an area in my life that’s desperately in need of a makeover: the living room.
Currently, my interiors remain virtually the same all year round … but with the changing seasons, I’m suddenly feeling the urge to cozy up my space. With fireside dinners and harvest-inspired parties in mind, I’m planning to take my living room from evergreen and ho-hum to autumnal and exciting!
Transitioning your space into fall doesn’t have to mean adorning every surface with gourds and adding shades of brown and orange wherever possible. For my design, I’m imagining heavy textiles, neutral colors, natural details, and small touches of glamour. Think: faux furs, cable knits, pine cones, and wooden accents. By keeping most of the seasonality concentrated in textiles and decor, I’ll create a space that can be updated easily year after year without breaking the bank.
Sizing Things Up
No piece of furniture or decor sets the tone in a room as much as a large area rug. I’m on the hunt for one that’s on the classic side, but made special by its deep, rich colors. Come spring and summer, it’ll be easy to swap the rug out with a more natural, seagrass-style one, and then continue to rotate the two for years to come.
Since I’ve got lots of fall and holiday entertaining on my mind, I’d like to rearrange my furniture in a way that’s super inviting and allows a smooth flow of traffic. Of course, the best possible arrangement will vary depending on the space, and although sometimes the only way to figure out what works best is to literally move the furniture into position – using a diagram of your room with furniture cutouts is a great place to start!
One final way I’m planning to get the living room fall-friendly and party-ready is by utilizing every surface available — each table top and shelf should serve a purpose! For the higher surfaces, I’ve given extra thought to which decorative items can set the festive tone (glowing pillar candles, inexpensive crystals, gilded pine cones) without going out of style next year. Similarly, the lower surfaces will host all refreshments, like seasonal muffins, spiked cider, and hot tea.
