Stylish Summer Picnic

Summer is the perfect time of year to leave our electronic devices behind and unwind with family and friends. For me, becoming a new mom this year has reinforced just how quickly the days pass so my husband, baby girl, and I decided to pack a picnic. We visited a nearby park to soak up some sun and devote some time to embracing life’s special moments.

We bought fresh ingredients and flowers from the farmers’ market, loaded up our picnic-inspired items sourced from Hayneedle, and headed outdoors for a relaxing afternoon under the trees.

We packed items that were easy to transport … our vintage-inspired wicker picnic basket had extra room to squeeze in Maggie’s toys and our picnic chairs were a breeze to throw over our shoulders.

With a seven-month-old in tow, we knew we’d need a large amount of space to stretch out so in lieu of a traditional picnic blanket, we set the foundation of our picnic with an oversized white thermal blanket. Its thick fabric provided the perfect amount of comfort to relax while getting lost in my new book (and it will double as a cozy throw this fall!)

Now is the time to take advantage of summer’s fresh produce and we figured we’d snack all day so we laid out fruit, vegetables, and sandwiches using oversized cutting boards and glass lock containers that were easy to refill. If you prefer to make your own summer salad at home, a colorful cranberry and shrimp arugula pasta salad packs a major punch of nutrition for outdoor celebrations. Or keep it simple with a layered fruit salad or a quick caprese salad! Simply boil pasta noodles and allow them to cool; then layer spinach, noodles, tomatoes, basil, mozzarella cheese and a drizzle of olive oil inside a lidded jar.

While Maggie took a nap on the blanket, I challenged my husband to a game of bocce. I love the way the gorgeous shades of gold and silver in the bocce ball set shimmered in the grass against the sun!

Refreshing lemonade served in picnic-friendly outdoor glasses is the perfect way to cool down, especially if chilled in vintage-inspired glass bottles and an ice-filled retro cooler!

There is truly no better way to celebrate summer so make sure you carve out a bit of time to soak up some sun with your loved ones this season!
