Outdoor Playroom

It seems that summer is officially on its way and Haeley Giambalvo of shows us some simple tricks for getting the kids outside. Visit her Styleboard for a specially curated collection of items.

Now that the days are warmer, I’m trying to get outside with my girls Stella (4) and Hazel (2) as much as I can before the sun gets too hot down here in Texas. While playing in the backyard and taking trips to the park is always fun, I also like to encourage them to do more indoor activities outside like playing with Play-Doh, painting, or reading a book. I love moving our meals outdoors too – on a good day we’ll eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner outside! Thanks to Hayneedle, we now have the perfect spot to do so. Using a few kid-friendly outdoor pieces, I was able to transform an empty patio off of the girls’ playroom into an outdoor living space they can call their own.

The space now functions as a cozy reading and lemonade drinking spot, an easy-to-clean arts and crafts area, and a sunny gardening and bird watching spot! We absolutely love it and spend time up here daily! The girls recently had their friend Sebastian over for a play date on their new patio.

To designate a spot for lounging, I paired this Trans Ocean Import Co Capri Ethnic Border Indoor / Outdoor Rugs with two Prairie Leisure Junior Adirondack Rocking Chairs. I love these chairs because they come in a rainbow of bright colors and are roomy and sturdy enough to grow with the girls for many years to come. The orange chevron Valencia Round Pouf Ottoman serves as a little table and extra seating if needed, and the Metal Flower Wall Decor with Rhinestones adds a fun dose of color to the space.

I want my girls to appreciate gardening and the care plants need to grow. They are trying their hand at growing their own vegetables with tomato and bell pepper plants in these gorgeous white resin Madison Planters. In addition, I think these colorful Greenbo Designer Rail and Deck Planters that hang on a balcony railing are perfect for flowers. I had fun switching up the drip trays for a color blocked effect.

The Dura-Trel 4 ft. Kids Picnic Table has already gotten a ton of use – its wipe-off surface makes it perfect for all sorts of messy arts and crafts projects like painting! I love the size of the table because it is not just for young kids – I can sit comfortably at the table with my girls.
To finish off the balcony I added a couple more accessories like a DIY chalkboard and a Corinthian Bells 36 in. Wind Chime that that adds another sensory element to the space. I can’t imagine a better morning than sitting up here with my coffee while the girls have their breakfast, watching for birds, tending to our flowers, and listening to the wind chime play in the breeze!

Safety tip: don’t leave children unattended on a balcony.
