Mother’s Day is this coming Sunday, and already it’s one of media’s biggest trending topics. Obviously for good reason – where would we be without our mothers? They get us here, of course, but more importantly, they get us through all the days after. Comic book artist Chris Ware, who drew this week’s Mother’s Day-themed New Yorker cover, offered a story to that point; when his daughter was born and a friend wondered how vulnerable, fragile babies make it at all, Ware’s stepmother said, “It’s mothers, honey.”
Ware isn’t the only one quoting mothers, either. People talked to a few new celebrity moms – including Shakira, Sierra Miller, and Snooki – about their lives with new little ones. My favorite thought came from Drew Barrymore: “It’s like the biggest crush I’ve ever had in my life!”
Inspired by stories of mothers and their quips, I scouted out a few more classic quotes about our fair parents, too:
“God could not be everywhere, and therefore he made mothers.”—Rudyard Kipling
“I am sure that if the mothers of various nations could meet, there would be no more wars.”—E.M. Forster
“Motherhood has a very humanizing effect.
Everything gets reduced to essentials.”—Meryl Streep
“When your mother asks, ‘Do you want a piece of advice?’ it’s a mere formality. It doesn’t matter if you answer yes or no. You’re going to get it anyway.”—Erma Bombeck
“I want my children to have all the things I couldn’t afford. Then I want to move in with them.”—Phyllis Diller
Of course, a gift can say a lot, too. Whether it’s a filled-to-the-brim basket of chocolate or a warm, bubbly foot bath, the gifts on our Mother’s Day gift guide are designed to help you help your mom savor her sweetest day.
