Fit to be Tried

Ideally, you get your exercise by bounding through fields of daisies, dancing with friends on a beach, teaching yoga to small children, or swimming in the sparkly blue waters off the Grecian Islands.  Unfortch, ideal exercise scenarios might not present themselves as often as your fitness needs do, which are, if you listen to the smart people, like, every day.  So you make little compromises.  And as fall approaches and cooler weather might send you indoors, you can still get your sweat on. Here are a few ways to get into your fitness groove, or at least successfully fake having a fitness groove …

Start with a solid centerpiece.

The elliptical trainer.

If you’re unfamiliar, check it out. The machine works your legs in either a circular motion (think slow motion running) or a back and forth cross-country motion, or an up and down stair climbing motion, whichever you choose, and while your legs are busy, your arms are pulling and pushing, which gives you twice the workout you’d get on a legs-only, hampster-on-a-wheel machine.  The best thing is that it provides a great workout with virtually no impact on the knees, hips, etc. It is smooth and strong and quiet and though it has many settings, you don’t have to be a tech-head to understand them.  Thank you, good Schwinn people.

The mini trampoline.

There’s simply not enough room here to go into the health benefits of rebounding. But it includes whipping your whole lymphatic system into shape, letting you run in place and jump and screw around without hurting (again) your joints.  You might just have fun in spite of yourself and the notion of working out …
